My leadership style consists primarily of building relationships, discovering people’s talents and finding ways to utilize those talents to benefit the school in a way that is consistent with its vision. Teachers need to be able to build a sense of trust with their leader, knowing that their administrator will support them when the need arises, and treat them with respect and confidentiality if concerns come up. This means that difficult conversations are supportive and solution-oriented, and dealt with through mutual respect for one another. Every action done by an administrator needs to demonstrate this philosophy so that teachers learn that they can count on their leader. Decisions and follow up need to happen so that the community can trust you to do your job effectively, which means that actions needs to happen in a timely manner, and then communicated so that people know what steps have been taken and how change is progressing. Again, every action and form of communication needs to be done in a professional and respectful manner with student achievement as the highest priority, because actions speak louder than words. This approach in all circumstances will facilitate a strong culture of work ethic, positive relationships, and high expectations with all members of the community including students, parents, teachers and district leadership. Administrators have a responsibility to find ways to get things done, regardless of the obstacles, so that students can learn, and teachers can teach. Good communication and high expectations, in the setting of an organized and thoughtful leader, will pave the way for educational excellence.
